The Curriculum at Bordesley Village School

The National Curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used so children learn the same skills. It identifies the  subjects  taught and the standards children should reach in each subject. To see an overview of the Maths and Literacy curriculum for each year group please click on the PDF documents at the bottom of this page.

Phonics and Spelling

In Foundation stage and Key stage 1 children have daily phonics sessions which are planned in accordance with the government’s Letters and Sounds document. In these sessions children are taught new phonemes (sounds) and how to blend them to read words. They are also taught how to segment phonemes to spell new words. The scheme provides us with games and resources to support our teaching of phonics. It aims to build pupils’ speaking and listening skills, as well as prepare pupils to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. Children learn that some ‘tricky words’ cannot be decoded using phonics and that these words need to be learnt differently. To supplement their learning in this area children have sets of spellings to learn at home which link directly to each of the ‘phases’ taught in the ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme. Daily phonic sessions continue into KS2 where necessary for groups of children.
Reading is taught through a mainly group or guided approach with the teacher or teaching assistant. Children are exposed to a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction texts. Each week children will also have the opportunity to explore texts independently, as well as accessing a whole range of activities to support their phonics, spellings, grammar and reading comprehension.
In KS1, We use the popular and well established Oxford Reading scheme and real books written by popular authors. As pupils move into KS2, they continue to follow the reading scheme in order that they learn more advanced deduction and inference skills. The school uses the Oxford Reading Treetops scheme, which is closely linked to the programme used in KS1. In addition children are given the opportunity to read more demanding texts written by popular authors to further their reading skills
A reading diary is sent home with the book. This is designed for parents and school to log reading and communicate on any relevant issues (so a parent might write that their child found a particular book too hard or they struggled with specific words).

Topic Curriculum

At Bordesley Village our children provide a rich cultural diversity. Many families are new to the country and the children have limited experiences of the subjects we teach. We therefore deliver a lot of our learning through topic based themes which incorporate practical activities and educational visits to provide a more hands on experience for our children.

Each new topic is introduced by a topic day on which children will undertake a range of activities, they often dress up, cook, create and perform!! Below are some examples of the activities that the children undertake.
